Oculoplastic Medical Procedures *
Our specialty is medical and surgical treatment of the structures around the eye, including the eyelids, tear drainage system and associated areas.
-
Ptosis / Droopy Lids - Abnormally low upper lids, this often happens when the tendon of the muscle that lifts the upper lid stretches causing the upper lid(s) to be low. This occurs with one or both upper lids. Surgery can be performed to lift the lids.
-
Dermatochalasis / Baggy Lids - Usually inherited. The skin of the lids become loose and fat bulges forward. Blepharoplasty is the surgery that is performed to remove excess tissue from the eyelids. In the upper lids blepharoplasty can be performed for cosmetic reasons. It can also be performed to improve vision in which case it may be covered by insurance. Lower lid blepharoplasty is almost always considered cosmetic.
-
Entropion / Lid Turning In - results in lashes rubbing against the eye. This is uncomfortable and runs the risk of causing an infection of the surface of the eye.
-
Ectropion / Lid Turning Out - the lower lid is not effectively protecting the eye. May result in tearing and infections.
-
Tearing - is often caused by blockages in the tear drainage system requiring evaluation and treatment.
